Bryan, OH - May 2007: Spangler Candy Company announced today that it will conclude the wholesale candy and tobacco operations of its subsidiary, Spangler Wholesale, on Friday, June 8, 2007.
The wholesale operations will be assumed by Superior Wholesale Distributors of Lima, Ohio, who will begin servicing Spangler Wholesale customers on Monday, June 11. Superior will continue to offer Spangler Wholesale customers a full range of candy, tobacco and food products.
Spangler will convert the former Spangler Wholesale location at 119 South Beech Street, Bryan, into a fulfillment center serving Spangler's growing internet business.
The fulfillment center also will manage orders for the company's "Save Wraps for Stuff" program, through which consumers can use Dum Dum Pops wrappers and cash to purchase premium items. Richard Trubey, Spangler Wholesale's General Manager, will manage the fulfillment operations.
Stan Stahl, sales representative for Spangler Wholesale, will join Superior Wholesale as a territory manager. Four of Spangler Wholesale's employees will be retained in the fulfillment center. Remaining bargaining unit employees will be eligible for positions at Spangler Candy Company's manufacturing facility in Bryan. Three full-time positions and one part-time position will be eliminated as a result of the sale.
Bruce D. Spangler, president of Spangler Wholesale, will become a part-time consultant to the parent company.
"The elimination of the wholesale business is consistent with Spangler Candy Company's focus on manufacturing confectionery products," said Dean L. Spangler, President and CEO of Spangler Candy Company. "For some time we have been concerned about the conflict of manufacturing and marketing children's candy products while also being involved in the sale and distribution of tobacco products."
"We manufacture 8 million Dum Dum Pops every day, and we are the largest candy cane manufacturer in the world," Mr. Spangler continued. "We are continuing to grow as a sugar candy manufacturer of global significance. This transaction allows us to focus our efforts on growing our core brands."
