Bryan, OH - June 2011: In the final step of its careful leadership transition, the Spangler Candy Company board of directors has elected Kirkland B. Vashaw as president and chief executive officer.
He becomes the seventh individual to lead the company during its 105-year history and the first from the Spangler family's fourth generation. Dean L. Spangler remains as chairman of the board and will continue to work full time focusing on the company's investment, community and industry interests while providing counsel and support to the management team.
Kirk grew up in suburban Maryland. He received his Bachelor's degree with honors in engineering from Cornell University in 1994. After college he worked for Gilbane Building Company, a large construction firm on the east coast, as a project manager overseeing construction of major public buildings. In 1999 he enrolled at the University of Michigan where he earned a Master of Business Administration with high honors in 2001. While at Michigan, Kirk served as a summer intern at Spangler Candy Company.After obtaining his masters degree he worked in Gillette's marketing department in Boston.
Mr. Vashaw joined Spangler Candy Company in 2003 managing the company's Disney license and then became responsible for the company's contract manufacturing business. He was elected as a vice president in 2006 and became president in 2008.
His community activities have included Fountain City Festival, Junior Achievement, the Bryan School District facilities committee the BSD levy committee and the Williams County Airport Authority.
Kirk resides in Bryan with his wife, Sarah, and daughters Allison and Lucy, and is a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.
A 1970 graduate of Michigan State University, Dean Spangler had a successful career outside the family company and was chief executive at Boren Brick one of the nation's largest brick manufacturers. He joined Spangler Company in 1996 as president and became chief executive officer in 2000. He has served on the Spangler board of directors since 1976.
Mr. Spangler has always been active in the community and is currently chairman of the Bryan Area Foundation, chairman of New Era Ohio, LLC, and a member of the board of Sauder Woodworking and Sauder Village. He resides in Bryan with his wife, Ann, daughter, Abby and son Christopher. He also has an adult daughter Mrs. Ren Rotondo (Gretchen) and granddaughter, Juliette Rotondo, who reside in North Carolina.
Both Kirk Vashaw and Dean Spangler are nephews of Arthur G. Spangler, who founded Spangler Candy Company in 1906. Arthur's brother, Omar Spangler, is Kirk's great-grandfather and Dean's grandfather. Kirk Vashaw's grandfather, the late Harlan Spangler, was the Spangler president from 1968 to 1976 and is Dean Spangler's father.
