Spangler Candy Elects New CEO

Bryan, OH - September 2000: The board of directors of Spangler Candy has elected Dean L. Spangler president and chief executive officer. He becomes the sixth individual to lead the company during its 94 year history. C. Gregory "Greg" Spangler remains as chairman of the board and will continue to work full time focusing on the company's investment activities and providing counsel and support to the Spangler management team.

Dean L. Spangler joined the family-owned candy company as president on October 1, 1996 following a successful business career, which included ten years as the president and CEO of Boren Brick, one of the largest manufacturers of clay brick in the Carolinas. Dean is a 1970 graduate of Michigan State University. He has served on numerous industry association boards in the brick industry and is currently a founding directory of The Candy Alliance, LLC, a cooperative effort of medium sized independent candy manufacturers. He has served on numerous civic boards and currently is a director of the Bryan Area Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Bryan Area Foundation and a member of the City of Bryan's Charter Review Committee.

Dean was on the Spangler Candy Company board of directors from 1976 until 1994 and was elected to the board again in 1997. He is the son of Harlan G. Spangler (deceased) and Ernestine Spangler. Harlan Spangler was president of Spangler Candy Company from 1968 until 1976. Dean resides in Bryan with his wife Ann and stepdaughter, Abby. He also has a grown daughter, Gretchen, who resides in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.

C. Gregory Spangler began his career with the Bryan candy company in 1969 as assistant treasurer. Since 1978 he has been president and chief executive officer and a member of the board of directors since 1976. Prior to joining Spangler Candy, Greg was a staff accountant with Haskins & Sells (now Deloitte & Touche) in their Dayton, Ohio offices. Greg graduated from the University of Michigan with a masters degree in 1963 and he became a certified public accountant shortly thereafter. He has served on numerous industry and civic boards. Currently he is a trustee and officer of the Bryan Area Foundation. Greg and his wife, Mimi, have three children: Lora Knight of Bryan, Julie Klug of Cincinnati, and John, an employee with Spangler Candy. They also have three grandchildren. Greg is the son of Charles B. and Martha (deceased) Spangler.

Both Greg and Dean are great nephews of Arthur G. Spangler, who founded Spangler Candy Company in 1906. Two of Arthur's brothers, who joined the company shortly thereafter, were Ernest D. Spangler, the grandfather of Greg Spangler, and Omar G. Spangler, the grandfather of Dean Spangler.
