Bryan, OH - April 2006: About 8 million Dum Dum Pops® roll off the production lines every day! In 2006, Spangler Candy Company, makers of Dum Dum Pops® and more candy canes than anyone in the world, celebrates 100 years. To commemorate the sweet century, Spangler Candy introduces four new Dum Dum Pops flavors, including two retro favorites. Spangler also kicks-off a contest to honor those who, like Dum Dum Pops, make life a little sweeter every day.
"We're excited to celebrate 100 years of making life sweeter, and want everyone to share in our fun and happy memories in bringing Dum Dum Pops and treats such as Saf-T-Pops®, Spangler® candy canes, Circus Peanuts and Spangler® Chocolates to the world," said President and CEO Dean Spangler, grandson of Omar Spangler, one of the company's founding generation.
It started back in 1906 when Arthur Spangler acquired the Gold Leaf Baking Powder Company for $450, and then moved it to his hometown of Bryan, Ohio. He continued making baking powder, baking soda, cornstarch, laundry starch, spices and flavorings. His brothers Omar, Ernest and Truman eventually joined him in the business. In 1911, Ernest suggested the company enter the candy market and the brothers introduced the Spangler Cocoanut Ball-their first candy product.
Dum Dum Pops: The Little Pop that Brings Big Smiles. Dum Dum Pops joined the fold in 1953 when the Spangler brothers bought the trade name and equipment from the Akron Candy Company, building it into the company that now makes 8 million Dum Dum Pops each day. Known as the little lollipops that bring big smiles, today Dum Dum Pops is a well-recognized candy brand and Spangler Candy's flagship product. Invented in 1924 and named so that any child can say it, Dum Dums are a perennial favorite of all ages. Dum Dums are often used as small expressions of kindness and gratitude, whether as giveaways at the doctor's office, rewards from parents for good behavior or perfect-sized customer thank-you's, earning the distinction of "America's Favorite Giveaway Lollipop."
"Everyone has a happy memory about Dum Dum Pops," added Dean Spangler. "Maybe it was the bank teller who gave Dum Dums to every child, the teacher who kept them on her desk, or the barber who gave them to toddlers as they braved their first haircuts," he said. "Dum Dums remind us that there's always room for a little sweetness in each day. People never forget how acts of kindness-big or small-make them feel; it can even change their lives."
"Make Life a Little Sweeter" Contest. To commemorate the milestone and the way Dum Dum Pops help people carry out kind gestures, Spangler Candy is launching a "Make Life a Little Sweeter" contest. The contest honors people who make life better for those around them through the little things they do.
Spangler Candy's Public Relations and Brand Manager Diana Eschhofen said, "It's the little things that sometimes add up to make a big difference to others, and Dum Dum Pops are a testament to this." Eschhofen explained, "It's not only those who start foundations or lead charities who make a difference. Sometimes, it's the one who just uplifts people or the community through small gestures and deeds. Maybe it's the kid who cuts an elderly neighbor's grass, the local business owner who's loved by all, or simply the person who always has a warm smile to offer that means a lot to someone. It's this kind of wholesome good-heartedness that Dum Dum Pops help to convey, and what Spangler Candy celebrates."
The "Make Life a Little Sweeter" contest launches on June 12, 2006, along with Spangler Candy Company's hometown event, the Bryan Jubilee. Throughout the summer, nominators can go to www.dumdumpops.com to enter online or download an entry form and write a short essay about their unassuming hero. Also, watch for the Dum Dum Pops Drum Man Mascot at venues throughout the country, handing out lollipops and contest information. The contest culminates on August 31, 2006, the official Spangler Candy Company birthday month. In the following weeks, three categories of winners will be recognized for their caring deeds: youth, adult, and senior citizen. One winner in each category will be awarded $1,000 and a case of Dum Dum Pops (about 2,000 lollipops!). The winning nominator will receive a case of Dum Dum Pops and a Dum Dum Pops t-shirt. In addition, 50 runners-up and their nominators in each category will receive a Dum Dum Pops t-shirt and Dum Dum Pops.
Bringing Back Old Memories and Finding New Favorites. The small, ball-shaped treats are famous for their array of great-tasting flavors, from crème soda to cotton candy and butterscotch, which rotate based on consumer demand. Anyone can go to www.dumdumpops.com and vote for their favorite Dum Dum flavor, weigh in on newly introduced flavors, pick flavors that haven't even been invented yet, and help to come up with new ones. There's also the "mystery" pop-a blend of two flavors at the end and beginning of a production batch. In honor of Spangler Candy's 100th anniversary, Dum Dum Pops offer new cherry cola and pink lemonade flavors, and has brought back two historical flavors - banana (first introduced in 1960) and coconut-pineapple (first introduced in 1953). Now, anniversary edition Dum Dum Pops assortment bags offer 16 flavors plus the Mystery Flavor™, extending the typical offering of 12 flavors plus the Mystery Pop™. For those who love just one flavor, such as Blu Raspberry, Orange Creme or Buttered Popcorn, single-flavor boxes are available through www.dumdumpops.com.
