Archbold, OH - June 19, 2001: An early morning fire on June 19 at an outside public warehouse facility in Archbold, Ohio destroyed approximately 110,000 cases of Spangler Candy Company products.
State fire marshals have identified arson as the cause of the fire, and they are also investigating several other recent suspicious fires in the Fulton County,Ohio area. Potential sales value of the lost Spangler Candy products, mostly Dum Dum Pops, was $6.5 million.
"It's certainly shocking and saddens us that this kind of damage would be caused willfully," said Dean L. Spangler, President and CEO of Spangler Candy Company. "It's something our people are going to be working darn hard to overcome." Spangler Candy has already begun to implement a plan to increase production and recover the lost inventory, which was fully insured. Employees will work the maximum allowable production schedule, including extended overtime and Saturday hours, to make up the loss. The company's annual two-week maintenance shutdown, scheduled for the first two weeks in July, has been postponed until later in the year; instead, those two weeks will be dedicated to intensive Dum Dum Pop production.
The company also plans to expedite installation of new Dum Dum manufacturing equipment, already underway as part of a previously announced company expansion. Spangler Candy anticipates no interruption in the distribution of its products. "We will continue to supply our valued customers with the same excellent service level they have come to expect from Spangler Candy Company," Mr. Spangler said.
The warehouse, located 20 miles from Spangler Candy Company in Bryan, was a leased facility and not a Spangler Candy Company finished goods warehouse. Spangler Candy used this facility, as well as other outside warehouses, during peak production periods. "Our company has been blessed over the years with good fortune," Mr. Spangler added. "This good fortune continued in this incident, as our manufacturing facility was unaffected. We have 400 dedicated employees who will rally to meet the challenge of replacing lost inventory and serving our customers."
