How to Make Candy Canes
Spangler History: The A-Z Candy Company of Detroit, founded in 1935 and reported to be the largest
candy cane maker in the nation, was obtained by Spangler Candy in March of 1954. The purchase
included the machinery and trade names of the A-Z firm. Candy cane production was estimated
to be twenty-five million pieces a year.
The A-Z Candy machinery was moved to Bryan. To accommodate the vastly increased manufacturing
volume added by Christmas candy canes, more storage space was needed. A large one story
air-conditioned warehouse was built, as was the first Quonset style building. The two
additions provided 10,000 square feet of space and capability to manufacture candy canes
year-round so that adequate inventory would be available to supply demand.
In the Fall of 1954, Spangler was ready for their first Christmas with peppermint candy canes.
A highlight was a five boxcar order from the Great A&P Tea Company for their New England
stores.
