Spangler Product & Ingredient FAQs

QA Lab Spangler Candy upholds the highest standards of quality for all of our confectionery products.  The manufacturing facility and all products are periodically tested to ensure safe operations and product results, including ingredient analysis, allergen testing, hazardous materials inspections including lead content, and quality audits.

Q: Are Spangler products kosher?
A: Most Spangler products which include Dum Dums (see note below on Dum Dum Chewy Pops), Saf-T-Pops, Spangler Candy Canes, Jelly Belly Canes, Shrek Candy Canes, Dum Dum Candy Canes, Sour Punch Canes, and Smarties Candy Canes, are certified kosher by the Orthodox Union (OU symbol). View the PDF file of our OU certification for the exact listing. The OU symbol is currently being added to our packaging and may not be included on all packaging at this time. 

Dum Dum Chewy Pops made in the USA are kosher.  Dum Dum Chewy Pops made in Brazil are not kosher.  Please check the back panel for the country of origin.  Circus Peanuts are not kosher.  Circus Peanuts are manufactured in separate kitchens and packaged on dedicated lines.
Q: My child is allergic to milk and nut products.  What products do NOT contain these ingredients?
A:

Dum Dum Pops, Saf-T-Pops, Swirl Saf-T-Pops, Marshmallow Treats, Candy Canes, Cane Classics, and Dum Dum Canes do not contain milk and nut products (see note below regarding Dum Dum Gum Pops and Dum Dum Chewy Pops).

The ingredients in these products, as well as the processing aids (such as release lubricants), do not contain any tree nuts, peanuts, peanut by-products, eggs, milk, or dairy products. These products are processed on dedicated lines.

Dum Dum Gum Pops and Dum Dum Chewy Pops made in the USA are free of peanuts, tree nuts, egg, gluten, and milk.  Dum Dum Gum Pops and Dum Dum Chewy Pops made in Brazil are manufactured in a facility where peanuts and milk are used in the manufacturing of other products.  Please check the back panel for country of origin.

Dum Dum Chewy Pops are a new item of small or larger filled pops (chocolatey chewy filling, sour chewy filling, and gum filling).  These filled pops are in a 3-color bag and are not mixed with our Original Dum Dum Pops.

Q: My child has an intolerance to the gluten protein found in wheat. What products do NOT contain this ingredient?
A: Dum Dum Pops, Saf-T-Pops, Swirl Saf-T-Pops, Marshmallow Treats, Candy Canes, Cane Classics, Dum Dum Canes and Dum Dum Chewy Pops do not contain the gluten protein found in wheat, barley, rye, or oats.

We have contacted our suppliers on the ingredients we use, including sugar, corn syrup, citric, malic, lactic acid, ascorbic acid, artificial flavors & colors, starch, release agents, and processing aids. These products do not contain the gluten protein that causes a problem for people with Celiac Sprue.
Q: My child is allergic to red food coloring. What Dum Dum flavors do NOT contain red coloring?
A: Dum Dum flavors that do not contain red coloring: Blue Raspberry (blue), Sour Apple (green), Cream Soda (no color), Buttered Popcorn (yellow), Cotton Candy (light blue), Banana (yellow), and Coconut (white).
Q: I've heard about the melamine/milk issue in China.  Do Spangler products contain melamine?
A: Spangler Candy products do not contain melamine.  Further, all of Spangler Candy's ingredients are purchased from factories located in the U.S. and under the control of the FDA.  Spangler Candy does not purchase any ingredients from China.  View the PDF file of our certification regarding melamine.
Q: What kind of gelatin do you use in your Circus Peanuts?
A:  The type of gelatin that we use is pork.
Q: What kind of sugar do you use in your products?
A: We use either beet or cane sugar in the manufacturing process.
Q: What is the best way to store candy canes for next Christmas? Can I freeze them?
A: The best way to store hard candy for a length of time is to place it in a zip lock bag and store in a dry place.  Do not store candies in the freezer or refrigerator, as the moisture is too high.
Q: How many calories in a candy cane?
A: We manufacture different sizes of candy canes.  The caloric value will vary with the size of the candy cane.

Q: Is there any way I can soften the Circus Peanuts if they become hard?
A: You can soften hard marshmallow peanuts if you put them in the microwave for approximately 10 seconds, (microwave time may vary).
