Spangler History

4 Spangler BrothersIn 1906 Arthur G. Spangler acquired the Gold Leaf Baking Powder Company for $450, and moved the operation to Bryan, Ohio, where he changed the name to Spangler Manufacturing Company.

His younger brother Ernest, a candy jobber in nearby Toledo, joined the business in 1908 and they decided to add candy items. In 1911 they acquired the rights to a popular coconut item. Arthur hired the man who created the product, moved him to Bryan and introduced the Spangler Cocoanut Ball - Spangler's first candy brand.

Omar Spangler joined the firm in 1914. Omar's specialty was accounting. He left the Williams County Telephone Co., where he had been manager, to join his brothers. For detail and a list of historical moments look at our Spangler Timeline.
