Spangler Candy Announces Leadership Changes
Bryan, OH November, 2007:
The board of directors of Spangler Candy Company has announced promotions which set the future leadership plan for the 101 year old family company. Dean L. Spangler was elected to the position of chairman and chief executive officer. Kirkland B. Vashaw has become president and William G. Martin has been elected executive vice president and chief financial officer. All of the appointments will be effective on January 1, 2008.
Dean Spangler is the great-nephew, and Kirk Vashaw is the great-great nephew, of Arthur G. Spangler who founded the company in 1906. Dean is the son, and Kirk is the grandson, of Harlan G. Spangler who was president of the company from 1967 to 1976. Mr. Vashaw represents the fourth consecutive generation of the family to lead the company.
Dean L. Spangler (59), has been a member of the board of directors of the Bryan candy company since 1976. Formerly president and chief executive at Boren Brick in Greensboro, NC, he returned to Spangler Candy Company in 1996 as president and has been chief executive officer since 2000. He was elected to the additional position of chairman in 2006.
Dean graduated from Michigan State University in 1970 and began his career in public accounting with Arthur Andersen & Company's Cleveland office. Dean is married to the former Ann Davis. They reside in Bryan with daughter, Abigail and son, Christopher. Dean has a grown daughter, Gretchen Rotondo who resides in Wrightsville Beach, NC with her husband, Ren.
Mr. Spangler has been active through out his career in various community, civic, and national industry organizations. He is a past president and past board member of the Bryan Chamber of Commerce, past board member at Orchard Hills Country Club and past Vice Chair of the Bryan Economic Growth Council. He is also a past member and officer of the National Confectioners Association Executive Board. Currently he is a member and trustee of the Bryan Area Foundation, a trustee of the National Confectioners Association and a member of Bryan Rotary Club. In 2001 he was recognized as N.W. Ohio's Entrepreneur of the year and was a national finalist.
Kirkland B. Vashaw (35), joined the family owned company in 2003 to manage the company's licensee relationship with Disney. He became vice president in January 2006.
Mr. Vashaw received an engineering degree with honors from Cornell University in 1994 and was employed by Gilbane Construction, a large general contractor on the East Coast, until 2000 as a project manager overseeing construction of major public buildings. He returned to school at the University of Michigan where he received a Masters of Business Administration with high honors in 2001.
After graduate school, Kirk was employed by the Gillette Company in Boston, as a brand manager. Kirk's community involvement includes work with the Fountain City Festival and Junior Achievement. Kirk and his wife, Sara, have two children, and reside in Bryan.
William G. Martin (41), joined Spangler Candy Company in 1999 as the company's controller. He was promoted to vice president and chief financial officer in January 2006.
A native of Ayersville, Bill Martin received his bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University in 1988. After college, Bill was employed by the public accounting firm of Ernst & Young in their Toledo office. He received his CPA license in 1993.
In 1990 he joined Pilliod Furniture in Swanton, Ohio and began a career in the furniture business. In 1994 he was transferred to High Point, North Carolina following LADD Furniture, Inc.'s acquisition of Pilliod and was vice president and controller of Pilliod until he joined Spangler in 1999.
In Bryan, Bill has been active in the YMCA where he has been a board member, member of the finance committee and has served as Treasurer. He is also a member of the Bryan Athletic Boosters Board and coaches youth soccer, basketball and baseball. Bill and his wife, Donna, have four children, Kevin, Hillary, Thomas and Austin and reside in Bryan.
